Calgary Co-op is taking steps to enrich our member communities and invest in our planet. We’re excited to share a few of the initiatives that we think the planet, and you, our members will appreciate.
We're Clearing The Air
We’re capturing harmful carbon emissions and converting them into all-natural, beautifully scented biodegradable soaps.
How, you ask? By installing a carbon capture unit in our Head Office in Calgary, we capture carbon emissions and convert them into potassium carbonate, otherwise known as pearl ash, which is used to make our six all-natural Cal & Gary’s soaps! With this unit, we are reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide by 6 to 8 tonnes!
We're Making The Switch
Our stores need a lot of energy for lights, refrigeration, and heat, so we look for every opportunity to be smarter about our energy consumption.
Calgary Co-op is the only grocery store in Western Canada to use high-efficiency cogeneration CHP (combined heat and power) units for better energy efficiency. Currently, six of our stores have CHP systems.
In addition, we’re switching all our in-store lights to LED lighting, which uses 80% less energy than traditional lights.
Proud to say we’re reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 700 tonnes every year!
It's In The Bag
Reducing plastic is as easy as 1,2,3!
Our Cal & Gary’s reusable produce bags come in a convenient three pack and are perfect for your produce aisle products. They’re durable, reusable, and washable!
Bring in your own reusable grocery bags and we’ll donate 3 cents per bag to our community foundation. That money goes back into the community to support our most vulnerable population.
Our 100% compostable bags do double duty! Carry home your goods in our City of Calgary approved 100% compostable bags, then reuse them in your compost bin. It’s a win-win!
We're Plugged In
We now provide EV charging stations at our Sage Hill and West Springs location, so you can power up your electric vehicle while you shop, then hit the road!
Every step counts, and working together, even the smallest steps can lead to big change for a healthy future.
Capture over 900 gallons of rainwater for your garden. Pre-order your Green Calgary rain barrel today and pick up yours at select Calgary Co-op locations on May 6, 27 or June 17.
